I run creative nonfiction, journalism and poetry workshops for people of all ages. I use my personal experience as a writer and English teacher to engage participants, utilising and developing their skills and passion for writing.
Creative Nonfiction: Experiment with a range of life writing genres, including personal essays, experimental nonfiction and memoir. Learn about suitable publications to approach, how to submit work to literary journals, and develop strategies and techniques whether you want to write short essays, long-form essays, memoir or a nonfiction book. This can include how to generate ideas, the ethics of writing about people you know, pitching to editors, researching your topic, working with an editor on edits, invoicing for your work, and general aspects of freelance writing.
Journalism: Learn how to develop your work from an idea and pitch through to the published piece. This can include how to generate ideas, unique responses to current issues and news, the ethics of reporting, pitching to editors, researching your topic, interviewing sources, transcribing and writing up interviews, creating a headline or title, working with an editor on edits, invoicing for your work, and general aspects of freelance writing.
Poetry: Learn about a range of poetic techniques, genres, styles and approaches. Experiment with new and unusual formats. Practise performing your work aloud or, if you prefer, develop a series of poems on a theme. We will discuss suitable publications that might publish your work, how to approach an editor, entering competitions, and general aspects of freelance writing.
All workshops can be technology-free or can utilise the latest digital storytelling tools and devices, and can be adapted for any group of people.
The workshops are accessible and inclusive; just let me know your needs. I have Mental Health First Aid training, CPR training, a Working With Children Check, and full teacher registration from the Victorian Institute of Training.
Location: Melbourne metro and other areas on request.
