Workshops

I run fun and engaging writing workshops for people of all ages. The workshops can focus on memoir writing, creative nonfiction, journalism, fiction and/or poetry, and develop participants’ skills and passion for writing. I have run workshops for Banyule Council, Transcend Support, Trans Families, the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council, and other organisations, as well as privately. You can find details about upcoming workshops here.

Memoir/Creative Nonfiction Writing: Participants experiment with a range of life writing genres, which can include memoir, personal essays, creative nonfiction and experimental nonfiction. Learn strategies and techniques for writing short pieces, long-form essays, a memoir or a nonfiction book. Topics covered include generating ideas, the ethics of writing about family and friends, pitching to editors, researching a topic, working with an editor on edits, invoicing and taxes as a freelance, and general aspects of freelance writing.

Journalism/Freelance Writing 101: Participants learn how to develop a story from an idea through to a finished piece. Topics include generating ideas, forming a unique response to current issues and news, the ethics of reporting, pitching to editors, researching your topic, interviewing sources, transcribing and writing up interviews, creating a headline or title, working with an editor on edits, invoicing and taxes as a freelancer,  and general aspects of freelance writing.

Poetry Writing: Participants learn about a range of poetic techniques, genres, styles and approaches. Experiment with new and unusual formats. Practise performing your work aloud or, if you prefer, develop a series of poems on a theme. We will discuss suitable publications that might publish your work, how to approach an editor, entering competitions, and general aspects of freelance writing.

Customised workshops: I can put together a workshop that suits the need of your organisation or group. This can be on any of the genres listed above or others, including literary fiction, genre fiction (e.g. romance, mystery/thriller, horror, fantasy or science fiction).

Training: I run professional development for educators, and training for staff in a variety of organisations. I can focus on sensitivity training, cultural diversity training, LGBTIQA+ inclusion training and many other types of training related to diversity and inclusion.

All workshops are accessible and inclusive, and can be adapted for any group of people; just let me know your needs. I have Mental Health First Aid training, CPR training, a Working With Children Check, and full teacher registration from the Victorian Institute of Training.

Location: Melbourne, Australia and other areas on request.
