I run fun and engaging writing workshops for people of all ages. The workshops can focus on memoir writing, creative nonfiction, journalism, fiction and/or poetry, and develop participants’ skills and passion for writing. I have run workshops for Banyule Council, Transcend Support, Trans Families, the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council, and other organisations, as well as privately. You can find details about upcoming workshops here.
Creative Nonfiction: Participants experiment with a range of life writing genres, including personal essays, experimental nonfiction and memoir. Learn about suitable publications to approach, how to submit work to literary journals, and develop strategies and techniques whether you want to write short essays, long-form essays, memoir or a nonfiction book. This can include how to generate ideas, the ethics of writing about people you know, pitching to editors, researching your topic, working with an editor on edits, invoicing for your work, and general aspects of freelance writing.
Journalism: Participants learn how to develop your work from an idea and pitch through to the published piece. This can include how to generate ideas, unique responses to current issues and news, the ethics of reporting, pitching to editors, researching your topic, interviewing sources, transcribing and writing up interviews, creating a headline or title, working with an editor on edits, invoicing for your work, and general aspects of freelance writing.
Poetry: Participants learn about a range of poetic techniques, genres, styles and approaches. Experiment with new and unusual formats. Practise performing your work aloud or, if you prefer, develop a series of poems on a theme. We will discuss suitable publications that might publish your work, how to approach an editor, entering competitions, and general aspects of freelance writing.
All workshops are accessible and inclusive, and can be adapted for any group of people; just let me know your needs. I have Mental Health First Aid training, CPR training, a Working With Children Check, and full teacher registration from the Victorian Institute of Training.
Location: Melbourne, Australia and other areas on request.
